Flashback

This was the flyer for my first rave. Man, so long ago (relatively). It was dirty, sweaty, skanky, really sweaty (there was a light rain falling all night... we were indoors), crazy, absolutely awesome. I dont have any inclination to go partying like that anymore, er, dont quote me on that, id do it again in a second as long as the party has no kiddycore elements, and maybe not happy hard either, but I have been listening to much oldskool and its both tip and top. Another thing stopping me is that I'd feel really old. Not as old as the DJ's though, these guys keep getting older whilst the crowd gets younger? Do they enjoy the conversation? Or do they relate to the kids? I guess it could be about the music, but...

Do you daydream?

Does it ever resemble this?

Whacky. I like it.

Chickens in suburbia

Earlier today I saw some chickens. Or roosters. Whatever, it doesnt matter their gender, but they were by the side of the road and right near my house. Now I dont live in anything resembling a rural area, except perhaps for all the four wheel drives, so this stood out pretty significantly, much like a cow would, if the road were a little bigger. But this is the second time I have seen them, the first I put down to mild psychosis, but now this confirms it (the chickens, not the psychosis). Too encase this with concrete, and let it bare scrutiny, I also took pictures.

Served by Katie at Lane 2

Just went up to the bottle shop to resupply dad and his work chums, as none of them could drive, and they had been at a lunch meeting and follwed it up with drinks here in the sun, possibly on a pretense of relaxed discussion of the outcomes of said meeting. Anyway, the girl working was a cutie. And working alone, she must have been 18 or 19, now if I were going to knock off a store, I'd be hard pressed to find a better alternative. It was empty save for myself, there was a single staff on, and a young girl at that (whether she was single single, I didn't enquire, I was on a mission for benson & hedges and crownies). There wernt many people around, but as the station is across the street that would be highly variable. Not that I am planning that, but it was the second thing to cross my mind as I made my purchases.

Today's storm, some pics

How massive was todays storm. Just snuck on through and -wham! I was on the freeway, just after coming out of the tunnel and I could not see the road- couldnt see anything. I had my music as loud enough to dislodge fillings, but I couldnt hear it, I thought the windscreen was going to shatter. Never seen cars pull off the freeway to seek shelter under bridges, or just stopped, it was probably sensible, but wow it was intense as it went over. I took these when I got to work, really good place to track it as it moved to the south. When I checked the Bureau site, the colour gradient was at the dark maroon colour, which signifies an intensity of 300 mm/hr. Yes, thats 30 centimetres per hour.

Danger's my middle name

I ran with scissors yesterday. I clearly defied modern parenting experience. My mother would be turning in her grave, if she were dead that is, which she isn't. But, whilst on the topic, does anyone have a 500 Ruble note to confirm this whacky picture? Ok, never mind, I looked on Wikipedia and their pictures of the note dont have the little guy. Also he is of a better quality than those two other little blurry sailors. The image that is, not of his station or character, I can hardly comment on that. Besides, we have established the non-status of him anyway. Ok. I'm done.

The Banner of Misery

It nearly led to a bout of fistycuffs, but the computer and I sorted out our differences and I finished my autoscrolling banner. I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, and the fact it took so long to do is testment to that, but it worked out a treat. Check it out here :Link: if you are of a mind. Or not. If you do you will notice (actually you wont, as they work now) the other items that have caused grief. The "more" & "less" function is just downright spectacular. Due wholly to the fact it keeps the page in full, and only expands the single post. Leaves the others still wrapped and on the page without even a pageload. Its hard to appreciate without trying the alternatives perhaps. That and the restricted access, which was awful. Turns out to have a simple solution, but now I know, and thats how you learn I suppose. On somewhat of a sidenote, im thinking thoughts of Lancelot Link: Private Chimp. That was so cool.

Im excited

Yesterday, whilst perusing this internet thing, I came across a hitherto unknown (by me at least) mix of the TISM track 'Defecate On My Face', from 2002. I dont know how that one slipped past me, particularly since this Monosurround Mix is one of the phattest and dirtiest electro tracks I've ever heard (may be slightly bias). Turns out that Machine Gun Fellatio did a remix also, but I've not heard this, the two versions were released together in 2002. BUT I did find the vinyl and expressed my interest in purchasing it. Along with a glow in the dark 12" of 40 Years Then Death, and The Back Upon Which Jezza Jumped. Find the audio of the monosurround mix :here:

The Great Wall of Israel

Acid Tounge

Taken from 3D World, last weeks Acid Tounge column. Ahem...
---
Getting a Degree while you party I would like to know whose bright idea it was to throw a succession of incredible parties and festivals right in the last two months of semester? Hmmm? Own up then. Who are the greedy gluttons preying on students and other bottom-feeders of the socio-economic scale, luring their hard earned dollars with glossy productions and super star DJs? It’s hard enough getting by week to week, watching as the essays pile up while I toil late into the night to earn enough to pay the rent and then blow the rest on rampant weekend abandon, scraping through to the next pay day with little more than silver shrapnel in my coin pocket. Sure, you may say that I should be responsible and decline the lure of music, shiny lights and shinier moods; spend my money on a decent diet and concentrate on finishing my bloody degree. But what’s the point of paying the exorbitant living costs of the inner city if I don’t take advantage of the life-style it affords? It’s the blessing and curse of living in a (almost) global city. There are simply so many great things going on each week that the only way to keep up with it all is to exist on a diet of crystal meth (which apparently some people are doing). So to hell with responsibility and career-mindedness, while my age and income are under 25 (grand) I am resolved that the word ‘responsible’ will not enter my vocabulary. Come to think of it, strike the words accountable, respectable, dependable and regrettable as well. Let’s face it, you’re only young once, and those hangovers are already starting to get increasingly severe with each bender, so in five years time you’ll be running on half your hedonism capacity. Best to take advantage of your copious brain cells and regenerating liver while you can. Summer’s nearly here, after all, and that means the seven golden B’s: Beats; Bass; Beer; Beaches and Beautiful Brown Babes. You only get six months a year to enjoy this city in its natural state of heat, so you’d best take advantage while you can. The workload may start to pile up as the travel savings dwindle, but at least you’ll always have the promoters and street press to blame for luring you out the door and into the humid night. Nick J.

Like a deer in headlights...

Us. Humans. We are watching the approach of something thats going to change our lives profoundly, but we really cant get out of the way because the danger isnt implicit. What am I talking about? Bird Flu. If, as it is seeming more and more likely is the case, the virus becomes easily passed human-to-human, we're in trouble. I'd almost go as far as to use the expletive 'fucked' in place of 'trouble' but that is a little common and I'd warrant the situation requires something a little more exotic on the whole, only I cant think of one. What did it have initially, I think an 85% mortality rate, and a two week incubation period, now how far could it possibly penetrate into todays modern jetset world... So the mortality rate probably has dropped due to early stage diagnosis, but you cant vaccinate against a virus when you dont know what it looks like. And as yet we dont know what will be the form it takes that will allow it to spread with ease, at least as far as I have heard, but I am behind in my reading. What should be do about it? If it comes it comes, I think this is an excuse to party more.

New Toys

I picked up a 250 GB external hard drive today. I seem to be perpetually burning things onto disc, like some sort of devil I guess, to make an analogy of the situation. So I figured why not just have everything on hand all the time, and not have to swap discs etc etc. And $199 was a pretty good price, Australian dollars that is. Pop into your nearest Harris Technologies store people. It makes the two 18.6 GB I've also got plugged in here look positively shameful. But, they aren't only storage, see, they have screens and RCA jacks and mpeg-2,3,4, jpeg, xvid, divx, avi blah blah blah decompression and infrared port with a remote control, so that you can plug it into your TV and watch whatever. Or your stereo. Pretty neat units actually. [Edit 15 Oct: Drunken ramblings removed, were of a poor grammatical standard anyway.]

Music Videos

The Uniting Nations filmclips have been pretty visually appealing, 'Out of Touch' & 'You & Me' being the two I am thinking of. Their new offering is of a similar calibre. Its called 'Ai No Corrida' and the hottie appears to do the vocals too. You can get it here :Link: for the next few days. For those that have asked, these are some of the sites that put up music videos (none of that rock nonsense, and certainly none of that rap/rnb shite). http://djveryrelentless.8m.com/index.html http://www.eurodanceplayground.com/index1.htm http://spysports.net/ http://www.rucom.net/

General Base

I got a new record today. Just one. But it is both an oldie and a goodie. General Base - I See YouThis is special because it has a b-side that is one of my all time favourites. The track; Rhythm & Drums. The original one. From 1995. Its killer, take my word for it.

Marketing: Both Good and Evil

Sometimes those long lunches go on for a little too long it seems, and some crazy ideas seem inspired and perhaps some inspired ideas seem to end a sentence prematurely. Let me illustrate.
Ok, they are all brilliant ideas probably stemming from a few too many at lunch, but really this was just an excuse to put up this one below. Its just a little too hard to try and avoid some sort of pun. I dont know quite how to approach this one, possibly with rubber gloves and a ten foot pole. I couldnt use it myself. Unless it was in the name of comedy. But still, I'd feel a little dirty, and yet the soap is so close...

Time-sink

Playing with php is not good for your health. Especially if you dont know what you are doing. Ive been trying to get a HIDE tag to run so that members only can view the contents sort of thing, or even using CODE tag to hide text similarly from randoms. But I dont have a forum and getting the scripts to run is a headache. Especially as I, a) don't know what I'm doing, and; b) can't upload php files. I should have it fixed soon, in that there will be that moment where I realise I was doing it all wrong all along, and proceed to throw the computer out the window. Or my hosting sorts itself out and begins to function. -----A little while later----- Sorted it out, I can hide the text from non-registered people, but it wont display the text I want to replace it with. But im going to leave it alone for the now. (Oh yeah, its not for here, ive a couple (i.e. 4) of other projects which are coming together and helping me avoid schoolwork). But I got a new host, and thats trouble free so far, and hoping to move to another better deal soon. Im using WordPress for the others, its taking some mental shift but its pretty damn versatile compared to blogger.

Comte de Lautréamont

Comte de Lautréamont is the psuedonym for Isidore Lucien Ducasse. A French writer and poet. He wrote Le Chant de Maldoror which is one of those arty classics about violence which was mentioned in the post previous. "Lautreamont forces his readers to stop taking their world for granted. He shatters the complacent acceptence of the reality proposed by their cultural traditions and make them see that reality for what it is: an unreal nightmare all the more hair-raising because the sleeper believes he is awake." So says Alex de Jonge (I think he wrote a book on the topic). The reason however for this whole mention was because he said something I quite liked: "Plagiarism is necessary. Progress implies it. It closely grasps an author's sentence, uses his expressions, deletes a false idea, replaces it with a right one." /end

Australia, The Lucky Cunt

This TISM album ran into some legal difficulties. However it wasnt a consequence of the title. It was due to the Ken Done style artwork on the cd cover.John Safran addressed this on one of his Musical Jamboree episodes, Humphrey B. Flaubert was on hand to explain it all.
Its actually a top story, of course, and well worth the small time investment to watch it. This Castpost service is buggy as however, its not even at beta testing, so persist in your efforts. Somewhat related, I was reading a review in The Age last weekend... No seriously, I was. Actually, I can only think of a couple of people that would appreciate that, and in this context. But, it was an interview by Nick Cave on Nick Cave, but under the nom de plume of William D. Routt. And his style of writing, his sense of humour and the overall sense of the article were so very familiar. I dont know if maybe its just a Melbourne thing, or maybe he spends a lot of time with TISM memebrs... Like I said, I dont know. The review was of his film The Proposition which is an Australian 'western' that is supposedly very violent. The sub-article on the page is enitled: Modern Classics of Arty Writing About Violence. I'll dig out the online version and put it up, its a good read.

The Equation of Time

I read this just recently and it was pretty interesting. There are 2 responses to the question, both work well together to explain it. From New Scientist 16 July 2005 --- Being very keen to see the return of the sun after the English midwinter, I began checking local sunrise and sunset times to see how the interval between them increases each day. The sunset time increases by more than a minute per day, but the sunrise time is getting earlier by considerably less than a minute each day. Why is there asymmetry? I suspect it has something to do with latitude, but what? Your correspondent has discovered a quirk of astronomy usually termed the "equation of time". I was wondering recently whether day length really changes faster at some times of year and slower at others. I plugged a table of sunrise and sunset into Excel and the graph shows that the day length stays briefly but depressingly static in midwinter, then changes rapidly through spring into another short period of near stasis in summer.

But then I noticed the oddly different behaviour of sunrise and sunset times: the two curves are not symmetrical. So I found the midpoint of the two, which gives the apparent (or true) solar time of noon. When you plot the difference between this time and the mean (or clock) time of noon across the year, you discover the complex curve seen in the second graph, which is a visual representation of the equation of time. Sunrise and sunset are symmetrical about this line.

Steve Head, Cholsey, Wallingford, Oxon, UK

The asymmetry in the rates of change of sunrise and sunset arises from the nature of Earth's orbit around the sun, and is caused by variations in the length of the solar day, the time between solar noons on successive days, throughout the year. Sunrise and sunset are essentially symmetrical about solar noon, but solar noon is not always at clock noon. The sources of this variation are, firstly, the Earth's elliptical orbit around the sun, and secondly, the 23.5-degree inclination of the Earth's rotational axis to the axis of its orbit around the sun.

From solar noon one day to solar noon the next, the Earth not only has to turn through 360 degrees, but through about 1 more degree to compensate for the movement along its orbital path during that time. While the Earth reliably turns through 360 degrees once every 23 hours 56 minutes, regardless of the time of year, it is the variation in how much further the Earth has to turn to complete the solar day that gives rise to the varying solar day lengths.

The Earth speeds up as it approaches the perihelion of its elliptical orbit, the point of closest approach to the sun, and slows down as it approaches the aphelion. The increased speed at the perihelion, together with the shorter distance to the sun, means the angle swept out by the Earth about the sun every day is greater near the perihelion than near the aphelion. So more rotation is needed to complete a solar day near the perihelion, causing the solar day to lengthen. This factor generates a sine wave-like variation in the length of the solar day with a period of one year.

The second source of variation is more difficult to visualise. At the summer and winter solstices, the plane joining the Earth's rotational axis to the centre of the sun is perpendicular to the plane of Earth's orbit, and a point on the equator has the least distance to travel between one noon and the next, so the solar day length is at it shortest. By contrast, at the equinoxes the Earth's axis is tilted towards or away from the orbital plane. Now, a point on the equator must travel further between consecutive noons, and a solar day is longer than at the solstice by about 22 seconds. This mechanism operates at other latitudes, which causes a variation in the solar day length with two peaks and two troughs a year.

These two sources of variation together create an intricate pattern of solar day length. While the changes from day to day are small, they are cumulative and can lead to marked differences between solar time and clock time during a year. They are the bane of sundial makers and are expressed in the equation of time, which shows a pattern resembling a sine wave of six months' period superimposed on a sine wave of one year's period. The time difference ranges from about 14 minutes negative to more than 16 minutes positive, with the steepest slope, of more than 20 seconds a day, occurring in December. It is the shifting solar noon added to what would otherwise be a symmetrical movement of sunrise and sunset that produces the asymmetry.

Japanese Bizarreness

The best part about it, apart from the fact that the bicycle has a basket on it, is that you have absolutely no idea what is going on in this clip. Its awesome. Its also probably pretty hot in that costume. Its like catching a bus to Crazytown, and you wouldn't want to miss it or anything. The bus that is. Wouldn't want to miss the bus. As then you would miss going to Crazytown. And that would be most unfortunate. You'd be living with mediocrity. And mediocrity is probably pretty pedantic about things like wearing a helmet whilst riding a bicycle. This dude would need a pretty big helmet too. Good thing he is already in Crazytown.
You probably dont appreciate the fact that I pulled an all nighter for an exam this morning and that whole lack of sleep thing is catching up. At least thats partially responsible for some of the above. I think the rest just comes naturally. Im a gifted individual, a gift in a sense that I wouldn't have paid for it.
Yeah, I dont know where this is going either.

And now for something completely different...

CHAIRMAN: ...Which brings us once again to the urgent realisation of just how much there is still left to own. Item six on the agenda: the meaning of life. Now, uh, Harry, you've had some thoughts on this. HARRY: That's right. Yeah, I've had a team working on this over the past few weeks, and, uh, what we've come up with can be reduced to two fundamental concepts. One: people are not wearing enough hats. Two: matter is energy. In the universe, there are many energy fields which we cannot normally perceive. Some energies have a spiritual source which act upon a person's soul. However, this soul does not exist ab initio, as orthodox Christianity teaches. It has to be brought into existence by a process of guided self-observation. However, this is rarely achieved, owing to man's unique ability to be distracted from spiritual matters by everyday trivia. ANOTHER ATTENDEE OF THE MEETING: Can I get back to that first point of yours? What was that about the hats?

Fundamentals of Engineering Handbook

For all that didnt get the email, I'll post it here for a wider circulation. --- Ok, Here is the link to the book of engineering everything. Its everything you would ever need to do any engineering degree that you were somehow inclined to take. It would have saved me a lot of misery if I had of obtained this when I was starting out. Or someone could have hit me with it and knocked some sense into me and I'd have gone and done something else. But then I wouldn't have had the opportunity to spend so much time with you all and in that wonderful building. <http://www.ncees.org/exams/study_materials/fe_handbook/index.php> Click on "accept" or "free" button or whatever it was, then you can download the whole thing at once or by section. Note that "sample" is used as a euphemism for full. Its got it all. Some discrepancy between size stated and actual size of file however. Turns out they did have it on their website, which is lucky for some of you, the original source I had was an anarchy site. Trying to bring down the US government. Clearly not doing a very good job of it. But handy if you want information on conspiracies, homemade explosives and the manufacture of illicit drugs. Actually, I think they also had some Noam Chomsky and Aldous Huxley stuff too, which is pretty cool in retrospect. This is probably the point where I digress and throw in some T.S. Eliot (yes, there is only one "l" in his name), but I shant. I will however put in a piece from Dante's Inferno that begins Eliot's The Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock.

S'io credesse che mia risposta fosse A persona che mai tornasse al mondo Questa fiamma staria sensa piu scosse. Ma perciocche giammai di questo fondo Non torno vivo alcun, s'i'odo il vero Sensa tema d'infamia ti rispondo. Which comes to;

If I believed that my answer would be
To someone who would ever return to earth,
This flame would move no more,
But because no one from this gulf
Has ever returned alive, if what I hear is true,
I can reply with no fear of infamy.

Anyway, not that any of you would probably read it but :Link: to the T.S. Eliot piece in full. Whilst on Dante, perhaps I should have entitled this email "Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate."

Big Day Out 2006

Its damn ages away, but the first round of acts is out. 2 Many DJs booked along with their Soulwax extension. Someone say "sideshow" please. I read also somewhere they were looking at booking Vitalic for the Boiler Room too, that'd be ace. What with Tiefschwarze & Spektrum here over new years, its all looking messy as.

New Records

Hangover Cure

Ive often promoted the drinking of more alcohol in order to kill the hangover, and made some vague reference to an article I read about it. Well, here is the article. Cheers.
---

Congener congeniality

19 March 2005 NewScientist.com news service I recently picked up a leaflet published by Health Scotland which said the darker the colour of my alcoholic drink, the worse my hangover would be. Whisky, red wine and brandy would lead to a worse morning after than would vodka or white wine, because the darker drinks contained something called congeners. After experimenting, I have to say this seems to be the case. But is it the congeners? If so, what are they and what do they do? Most people consume alcoholic drinks for their ethanol content. However many such drinks also contain amounts of other biologically active compounds known as congeners. Congeners include complex organic molecules such as polyphenols, other alcohols such as methanol, and histamine. They are produced along with ethanol during fermentation or the drink's ageing process.

Congeners are believed to contribute to the intoxicating effects of a drink, and the subsequent hangover. People who drink pure ethanol-based alcohols such as vodka have been shown to suffer fewer hangover symptoms than those who drink darker beverages such as whisky, brandy and red wine, all of which have a much higher congener content.

The congener denounced as the main hangover culprit is methanol. Humans metabolise methanol in a similar way to ethanol, but the end-product is different. Ethanol generates acetaldehyde, but when methanol is broken down, a major product is formaldehyde, which is more toxic than acetaldehyde and can cause blindness or death in high concentrations. Ethanol inhibits the metabolism of methanol, which may be why drinking "the hair of the dog" can alleviate hangover symptoms.

Studies have found that the severity of different drinks' hangover symptoms decline in this order: brandy, red wine, rum, whisky, white wine, gin, vodka and pure ethanol.

Monster mix sesh

A pic of my UV light, and an animation of Al on my dex. The darkness really works against any profound photo opportunites, so the most exciting thing may be the eq's colour changing. This was from Thursday night/Friday morning. That was a monster mix sesh, it sure hurts your back when you are hunched over the table for 12 hours or so. Clearly I didnt learn, as I did it again last night, got home from the city at 2:30am and had a play until 8:00am. The whole neighbourhood has been surreal in its quietness this last 4 days, I guess the school holidays mean people have gone away or fed their kids sedatives or something.

Vertigo setting in right about now-

Im not a fan of rollercoasters, or that sort of entertainment. Themeparks irk me. This is just daft. I know its no different as to where it is, as long as its bolted down, good foundations blah blah blah, but thats brown trousers territory.
